I generally just launch into English and if they don’t understand, we figure it out. Pointing at menus, translating, charades, it can be done! I dunno if it makes me rude but I usually just say “Hello, excuse me can you help me please?” and go from there I live in a touristy area and the Curls before girls shirt and I will buy this local clinic has a sign in English that says if you don’t speak the language, bring an interpreter. My go to is to say Hello in their native language followed by an English ‘hello’. I.e ‘Hola, Hello!’. Friendly greeting that lets them know my native language and they can decide how to proceed from there I’m Canadian, so I apologize that I don’t speak the local language, and then speak English if it’s a touristy area/service. If it’s a more rural area or somewhere not touristy, I ask if they speak English. I always ask. I find it funny people mention insulting for example with The Netherlands because I know plenty people at home that don’t speak English or are afraid to and have convinced themselves they don’t. I honestly haven’t had to ask if people speak English. Because in Europe most of them assume I’m American because of how I look. a lot of europeans chiming in so i’ll give my experience in Mexico City. my friend would just start speaking english and it seemed like a lot of ppl found that very rude. we were with another spanish speaking friend and she scolded our friend for assuming that mexicans in mexico city would know english . when i’ve been in cabo or cancun, then it was safe to assume the resort staff all knew english.

in turkey i would ask if they knew english or arabic before i asked anything , and they would give me their answer and we would continue from there. in the Curls before girls shirt and I will buy this middle east i would say it’s better to ask if they speak english, most older ppl knew only very basic english but younger ppl are decent with english I just say “Excuse me” in English because I already know there is a high chance they probably speak better English than me Neither. I say hello in the local language and will try to hobble my way through with basic, short phrases and lots of body language. If they speak English, they’ll automatically switch over and if not, we continue the conversation with lots of gesturing and pointing. I always make sure to say please and thank you profusely. It’s never been a problem, and I’ve never been treated rudely by locals.
