Despite that, I’ve never raped anyone, and I never will rape anyone, and if I came across a rape in progress, I’d do what I could to stop it. Even so, I don’t begrudge a woman for not knowing that about me–how could she? She can’t read my mind!–and I don’t begrudge her for doing what it takes to make herself feel safe, because there are bad guys out there who would rape her given the chance, but at the same time that doesn’t make it hurt any less every time I’m reminded that–through no fault of my own–half of society sees me as a barely restrained animal, a half-civilized beast who could commit sexual violence at any moment.
