Just the raw human cost of it all. And that’s nothing, they will get their gear. In Bangladesh, China, some parts of America, wherever there’s cheap manufacturing you couldn’t guarantee their safety. It would be a balance of the human cost, an estimate of the power they can generate, and ergonomic calculations to maximize every single calorie in your body into output. That made me cry, because that’s ultimately my job. To maximize. I’ve been on both sides of the glass doors, and I’ve been “maximized” for labor. I worked my way off the street at a young age and now I am a part of my own very rotten system that takes in healthy, needy individuals and grinds their bones to dust even if just a little. There is a direct cost to that decision and I will struggle with it for most the rest of my life. For much of humanity we were in the Malthusian Trap, a low standard of living due to the need for subsistence farming. All until the invention of the modern lathe. Now, it is up to men and women like me and my colleagues to come up with the next miracle so society can reach its next step in evolution. It means so much to me to be honored with such a responsibility.

What a time to be alive, to choose from the finest in all of history, and space to express the great variety of life in our own modern way. What a celebration art is!
