And if I meet a visitor in my country, I will use absolutely as much of their language as I can muster, because they’ll go home and say, “I met someone who spoke a little Swahili.” I live in Latin America. I tend to start with “buenos días, cómo está?” Then I wait for their response and answer them en español if they ask me how I am. Then I ask “habla inglés?” Depends a lot on the Coach Icicle Mustache Kansas City football shirt Furthermore, I will do this location and setting. If it’s reasonable to assume that they speak English, I’ll start speaking English. If not, I’ll ask. Sometimes I don’t even ask and just try to communicate with them in the local language if the odds that they speak English are slim enough. I’ve tried to learn a bit of Spanish, Italian or Portuguese but then people think you speak it way better than you do. Most of the time they will speak English off the hop to me anyways. So if I start stumbling through some Spanish it confuses them because they think I am talking in some weird ass English dialect they don’t understand.

Depends on the Coach Icicle Mustache Kansas City football shirt Furthermore, I will do this country. In Norway, I just speak English as it is very common there. In places like Mexico or Japan I at least attempt their language. The exception for me is Thailand. I tried to speak Thai on my first trip and the locals seemed very offended. Not sure if I accidentally said something insulting to them, or if I just butchered their language that badly they considered it an insult. I’m not European or Western actually. So I don’t have the same social history & experience so I just start speaking. It depends if I speak the language. If I can speak some of the local language then I’ll try to speak that. If I don’t speak any of the local language then I would lead with English, as I have no plan B if they don’t!!! I learned the standard greetings for German, French, Dutch and Italian (places I visited in my last few trips) and small chit chat for when going to corner stores and restaurants. If I struggle during the transaction, I’ll go with English (most often laces will have the menu in English below the local language names).
