I remember reading about this in college. I was flabbergasted just by the absurdity of all of it. Not only that, but this happened only 40 years previously. It’s like something from Borat that is clearly ridiculous, but was an actual thing. People often forget that being homosexual used to be illegal in Canada a single generation ago. Not gay marriage, but simply existing as a non-heterosexual. It was 1969, which is stretching “a single generation” pretty far. Most current Canadians weren’t born yet when homosexuality was decriminalized. The people who were children and young adults then were Boomers; that’s several generations ago. The oldest Gen Xers were in kindergarten.

The majority of people born in 1969 are only just approaching retirement age. “One generation ago” doesn’t mean “people who were alive then are still alive”, it means the average time between someone being born and them having kids of their own. Typically it’s 25-30 years. Those people born in 1969 who are retiring imminently are also more likely to be becoming grandparents than parents these days, which puts their birth year squarely at two “generations ago”. I teach LGBTQ2+ issues to public servants these days and this is still a lesson we touch on as to why people might be nervous about how the federal government will treat them. Though the fruit machine was retired in the 1960s, the Canadian government’s policy of discriminating against gay and lesbian staff was not abolished until the early 90s after a successful legal challenge (much like same-gender marriage was legalized in the early 00s).
