combine that with Regan allowing media polarization bad actors (Fox News, rove, am radio) amplified the Cleveland Browns Marvel Wolverine and Deadpool True friends shirt and I will buy this us (cis Christian conservative whites) vs them (everyone else) Ny working theory is that a series of bad choices from the right (I am sure the left has a lot of bad choices too but I think this one falls largely on the right) since Nixon has lead to this place. And its not just the politicians. In fact they are probably just following after power in it. A combination of religious institutions and corporations running into science gave cause to both of them pushing back against said science. In the case of religions the fight over evolution vs creationism has been a particularly brutal fight. And many believers have found themselves instructed to distrust science more and more often. Toss in the fact that mandated prayer in public school also got kicked out and the more fundamentalist members of the religious community became incensed. Further driving a wedge into the idea of a secular government and separation of Church and State. And then science began turning up research showing people were dying due to cigarettes. The corporations involved in this were understandably worried about the looming lawsuits from these discoveries and rather than facing the consequences they engaged marketing companies that came up with the idea of undermining the scientific consensus. And it was very effective. And people died. But the idea of corporations fighting science by introducing false counter claims under the guise of science had entered the arena.

Politicians on the Cleveland Browns Marvel Wolverine and Deadpool True friends shirt and I will buy this right after Nixon became increasingly invested in trying to find a way to counter the Dems rising power. They already were in bed with the corporations and thus latched onto the antiscience mentality behind the tobacco corporations who were major contributors to their campaigns. And then the problems from oil consumption began to come forth from the scientific community and the right jumped on board with the oil companies in pumping even more misinformation into the system. Then along came Ralph Reed and the Christian Coalition. The more orthodox religions has historically been reluctant to involve themselves in politics as they believed that doing so would corrupt both institutions. One’s political agendas would bleed into the religious views and vice versa. But Ralph Reed found a way to wrangle them into the fight on the subject of abortion and gay rights as well as the open wounds that were evolution and the removal of mandatory prayer. And they further boosted the rights bend towards antiscience.
