Just like how you would over-inflate your accomplishments to better your standing in an interview, a manager will also embellish their working style to make them seem better to work for. The unfortunate reality is that you’ll never know exactly how they are until you actually start working under them. I have friends who have had hiring managers tell them, during an interview, that they’re “extremely hands-off and open to letting the Cleveland Browns Autism Awareness I Am His Voice He Is My Heart 2023 Shirt Besides,I will do this employees work however they want to work” only to find out, after they’ve accepted the job, that the manager actually micromanages everything. Also, depending on what the candidate is looking for, “extremely hands-off” can also be a red flag. I once had a manager that was so extremely hands-off, it was clear he didn’t care about his reports or their individual success. It made the job difficult since none of us felt plugged into the larger company and were flying blind. This is why I personally prefer a micromanager over an extremely hands off one. At least with a micromanager you know you aren’t doing everything completely wrong

As a hiring manager, I love it when folks we’re interviewing ask me interview style “tell me about a time you…” questions. Like, think about a problem that comes up a lot in your line of work that a bad manager can totally ruin your life on, and ask them what they’ve done in the Cleveland Browns Autism Awareness I Am His Voice He Is My Heart 2023 Shirt Besides,I will do this past in that situation. So like, “Can you tell me about a time when a project was behind schedule, and what that was like for you and your team?” Wish I asked that at my last interview. I felt disrespected during it and this would’ve helped me understand whether that feeling was justified. (Goes without saying, you wouldn’t want to ask more than one or two of these kinds of questions, or it would start to sound like an interrogation.)
