I am cringe, and that’s based. I will never be based, and that’s not cringe. He was popular in the early 2010’s as one of the first big internet / cloud rappers (cloud is a genre of hip-hop with spacey lo-fi beats). People used to call him based because he would act hyper like a basehead (a crack addict) might. Crack is the free-base version of cocaine, which is why addicts are sometimes called baseheads. Instead of being insulted by the word, he flipped it around and started saying that being based is being true to oneself. If he’s hyper, and people call him based because of that, then he was like, “Yeah, I’m based. That’s who I am. I’m just being me.” Lil B has some good songs and did pioneer some sounds that would eventually become popular, but he was / is memed in hip hop circles as being the best rapper of all time. He frequently puts out mixtapes with like 40 songs on them multiple times a year. It was basically just an in joke that everyone worshipped him and it was all in good fun.

So people started saying things we based to mean that they were cool like Lil B was.
