Lots of good answers. A point I will add is that global media largely reflects the Chucky Snitches Get Stitches shirt in contrast I will get this peculiarities of the USA. And the USA has almost a uniquely bad political system. Many advanced countries have moved to multi-party systems, which reduces the power of major parties and encourages compromise. The US has a terrible, entrenched 2 party system that naturally leads to an “us versus them” mentality, especially when social media and almost unlimited amount of money are dumped on top. In multi-party systems, the ruling party/-ies have to compromise with each other to form a coalition to rule. That naturally restrains the more-extreme elements of their agenda. If the US were to modernize their political system, enabling a multi-party system (i.e. eliminating first-past-the-post voting, and many other reforms) should be close to the top of the list of things to fix. I’m older than you and my dad ended a long friendship with a guy who was pro-union and my dad, having never participated in a union or worked a trade, refuses to break bread with anyone who is pro union. That’s all it was. This was before social media and smartphones. But it was during the height of conservative talk (traditional) radio.

Social media for sure, but more specifically it’s this: the Chucky Snitches Get Stitches shirt in contrast I will get this fact the older generations (esp. boomers) hold so much power AND are poorly skilled at telling truth from lies when it comes to news and large issues. They grew up and formed their thinking skills in a world where they could trust newspapers, books, and people on TV to a far greater degree than we can today. Their critical thinking skills were/are just entirely unprepared for Facebook. Of course there are exceptions, but by and large, younger people are more skilled at navigating the digital world. Humans generally have a confirmation bias problem, but when you combine this with a world that the most powerful/rich generation just genuinely cannot comprehend properly, this is the result. The idea that one does not understand the world after all is terrifying, and most people never truly question their deepest assumptions all the way down. It’s just far easier to believe that your political opponents are purely stupid and evil than it is to rise to a level of complexity that you’ve never entertained in your life.
