They don’t need specific cause, other than “they don’t think you are a good fit”. They don’t need you to fail the PIP, but it helps protect them legally by having a paper trail that said your performance was bad, should you ever seek to dispute the termination in court or file a labor claim or something. By the time it gets to a PiP it’s just the company covering its bases when firing you. Especially as OP pointed out the expectations are completely unrealistic to achieve. That’s a typical tactic. It’s a shitty place to be in. OP should have pointed out to HR about his trip which cannot get cancelled before he signed off on the PIP agreement. If they didn’t extend it around the same time length he will be away.

You don’t even need references. I’ve had several interviews with 50+ tech companies and I have yet to be asked for a reference. Do not sign the PIP if you haven’t already. Signing the documentation basically acknowledges that you agree with their narrative. If they haven’t previously given you any indication that you were underperforming then you may have a wrongful termination suit on your hands but if you sign the PIP you’re basically saying “yeah, I do suck, that’s true”.
