And Pliney the Christmas Matching Teacher Jolliest Bunch of Teachers The Side Of The Nuthouse T-Shirt and by the same token and Elder died trying to rescue folks from the eruption of Vesuvius via ship (though it’s speculated he died from a stroke or a heart attack…) I love Pliny. If you know anything about him, that he was a war hero obsessed with understanding the natural world, there was no way he was going to hear about Vesuvius erupting nearby and live. By the way, my favourite part of the description of the eruption is people strapping pillows to their heads. It’s just so incongruously funny in the circumstances. For context, my experience of Pliny the Younger was in Latin class, so imagine sweating over this guy’s elegant but challenging prose as he describes a great natural disaster and suddenly coming upon an unfamiliar word. You sigh and grab your dictionary, only to question your sanity as you find the word to mean “pillow”.

Definitely. I’m not judging him one bit, he had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and was quite prepared to die for it. I always thought he would have wanted to die that way. Oh, and for those who don’t know about Pliny the Christmas Matching Teacher Jolliest Bunch of Teachers The Side Of The Nuthouse T-Shirt and by the same token and Elder, he’s sort of a running gag on the show QI for the many weird misconceptions we all still have about the world thanks to his work. For instance, he is the reason why most people still mistakenly believe that ostriches deal with danger by burying their heads in the sand. Question about this post title: Pliny the Younger witnessed the eruption and Pompeii destruction? I understood he wrote about both years later based on accounts of others, including the friend his uncle Pliny the Elder saved. Here’s a translation of his two letters describing the events and the actions of his uncle (Pliny the Elder). You have to sign up but it’s free, whether you want to give out your email address is up to you. In the letters he explains that he decided not to join his uncle on the ship to continue his other non-volcanic studies.
