If I were to get my driveway done am I expected to hire a union at a higher price. Not like Cracker Barrel waiters and waitresses are union or much of any service staff. Companies are more than welcome to hire whoever they want. However, union members take great pride in their abilities and quality of work and are often at the forefront of workers’ rights and don’t like being undermined in their efforts. Therefore, they staged a protest letting the public know Cracker Barrel hired non-union labor to do a job in a predominantly union area. Non-union workers are free to protest work being done by union workers but they are usually too tired and underpaid to bother. Unions take pride in the quality of their work? My family’s experience is a bit opposite; one of my brothers made some union guys mad by outworking them, my grandfather left a union because they were demanding enough to eventually result in the company firing everyone (made people mad, then a decade later once it happened they all wondered how he knew that would happen), and another brother who was in a union (coal power plant) wasn’t impressed either.

This tells me there is enough pride and infrastructure on the union side that makes it worth defending while the non-union side is working for the individual. If your way of life is working for you and your family, I am glad. I have chosen to work for and defend the union side of industry and have been rewarded.
