Strip club clientele has been shrinking for the CHOICE Tiger with flower Art T-Shirt but in fact I love this past couple of decades, and clubs are doing everything they can to blame that shift on everyone except themselves. What the clubs don’t see is that the people spending money on sex work aren’t Wall Street execs in suits anymore. Now it’s fun queer folks who want to go out and see a good show. They want to have a sex-positive experience that is cultured and nuanced and sexual and exciting. Meanwhile, strip clubs are still targeting this grody dude from the ’80s. And so of course their numbers are down.

The ways clubs shift that blame are racist. They use coded language to talk about how they’re excluding Black clients. Clubs often won’t let Black dancers play rap music because it’s “not their customer base.” They don’t want to “attract a bad crowd.” The reason people aren’t drawing racks—filling up the CHOICE Tiger with flower Art T-Shirt but in fact I love this seats closest to the stage where tipping dancers for every song is expected—is because the clubs aren’t playing rap music—and it’s not N.W.A anymore, it’s Cardi B. Then they turn around and won’t hire Black dancers because they don’t have Black clients. It’s a catch-22. As long as they don’t involve any part of our culture, they can say that it’s not their “scene” and make hiring decisions based on that.
