Show up, help, and find a way to acknowledge everyone’s efforts. That is how you make “political” allies at work. Each coworker will have a different weight on how important each of the Chasing You Like A Shot Of Whiskey T-Shirt and I will buy this 3 is (some really will hate help, others don’t care if you show up, etc.). That’s it. That’s the basic instructions to be a good, likable coworker. I agree. It obviously depends on the job, as well, but most of the office “politics” is just a question of whether you are tolerable. It requires a little bit of tailoring your interactions to your individual coworkers, but I don’t find it to be that much effort, and I interact with at least 50-100 people every single day. If you work in a team environment where your job depends on other doing thier job…. being likeable helps. Im not dropping everything to help the asshole at work. I will drop everything for Mike though, because hes awesome and will drop everything for me. I am not dropping everything for the guy thats “nuetral”, but I will add him/her to the que and work on it promptly once i have time.

The way you drop everything for Mike fuckin sucks. That’s like the people who stop traffic to let somebody go who doesn’t have the right of way. Sacrificing efficiency for favoritism sucks. It’s not so much “jumping to conclusions” as it is learning from experience. People who aren’t at least partly social, tend to be difficult to work with. I’m like the comment you are responding to and yes you are definitely jumping to conclusions. There is more to being social than talking at people and stopping them from being able to work.
