The photograph, taken by photographer Ronald Haeberle on June 8, 1965, depicts the aftermath of a napalm attack on a Vietnamese village. In the foreground, the charred remains of a young woman lie crumpled on the ground, a victim of indiscriminate bombings. The image is both horrific and heartbreaking, a testament to the devastating impact of war on innocent lives.

The title “Charlie Don’t Surf” is a reference to a quote attributed to US Marines during the Tet Offensive in 1968. The phrase was used to mock Viet Cong guerrillas who were hiding in tunnels and underground bunkers. However, in the context of Haeberle’s photograph, it takes on a sinister meaning, suggesting that even those who are not actively fighting are not immune to the horrors of war.

The Charlie Don’t Surf Death from Above Shirt became a powerful symbol of the anti-war movement during the Vietnam War. The image was used on posters and t-shirts to protest against the escalating conflict and the atrocities being committed. It served as a reminder of the innocent lives lost and the senseless destruction that war brings.
