Leave the first chance you get though. Keep applying for other internships. Yeah OP honestly, look at it this way. Many internships are unpaid (it’s messed up but true). The reason they’re even a thing is for the experience. Even though it’s a shitty company, it’s such a tough market now and may be even tougher when you enter the market for a full time gig. I did an internship where my employer promised my summers worth of pay at the end of the summer in full. I agreed because I was a college kid and needed money. I never got a cent, but I did get experience. Looking back, it sucked, but it certainly did get me where I am today.

It’s not well enforced but it’s true. Never take unpaid internships. This is technically a Performance Improvement Plan (PIP), so ask for 30-, 60-, and 90-day goals to meet to start getting your full pay back. Get it in writing because the 30-day honeymoon period will be over, but you still won’t have reached the competence they want. You have to get them to grant you at least 90 days before they pull the plug again. That’s when you start to really contribute. I feel for ya. Don’t let this derail you, don’t let it eat at your self confidence. You’re a sophomore in college, you have tons of potential, many more good semesters to go in college and lots to learn. Next summer apply for another internship. Definitely not this place. That’s fucked. I would still negotiate. Don’t worry if they get annoyed or frustrated. And hell take the job back and half ass the fuck out of it. Don’t overwork yourself for this shit company.
