So my advice would be to either try and help them see how they are damaging their future, or just put some space between yourself and them. You don’t have to cut them off completely. Just be strong enough to show what your priorities are. Walk away. Don’t go to the Charles Barkley Phoenix Suns legend shirt and by the same token and pub anymore and start planning things around your wife and kids and other people with similar interests. The guy won’t do anything for himself then just walk away from it. Let him figure it out on his own that friendship has run its course. The people saying mental health alert are probably right, but I’m getting big ‘Ed from Shaun of the Dead’ vibes as well. Sad for him but you have to put you first. You are a friend not his keeper. Be insistent on the Charles Barkley Phoenix Suns legend shirt and by the same token and no drinking, as I am usually the nominated driver I cannot tell you how many times I have been harassed to have a drink, oh just one won’t hurt etc I am driving the people I care about most, I don’t want just one drink thanks eff off! You are describing someone who has textbook depression. It’s not all suicidality and wallowing in a corner in tears, it’s dysthymia and anhedonia 90+% of the time. It might not be you, but he needs someone to talk to, he needs company, he needs motivation.
