I do similar with every engineer that joins my team. My mantra is put in some time to figure things out for yourself but if you’re spending more than a half a day reach out. This seems a bit extreme to me. If the intern has to move the Earth to accomplish one small task, no one can really claim that they were set up for success. At my employer, the expectation is that the intern will get a senior dev as a mentor, work on some non-critical project (as you suggest), and there will be an overall slowdown in work output from the mentor.

Even hired as a full time employee, there’s an expectation that new hires will be slow the Cavan Biggio Toronto Inline Signature T-Shirt also I will do this first few months as they’re getting up to speed. The more the better, these people may have performed this for more than a couple years, but depending on the amount of work, the people involved usually get blacklisted in every institution, which is what they don’t want if they’re predatorily employing kids for cheap to do a full gig. It’s frankly disgusting, this is serious.
