Is there no way to outright refuse this from happening? If i ever have daughters in the Cat Christmas The Tree Started It T-Shirt But I will love this future, i would not want this to happen at all. Don’t worry! You can refuse, yes, of course. It’s only a thing for people of Malay descent. Other people aren’t usually asked at all or even have it as an option. Most non-Malay people are totally unaware that it happens in Singapore, and among Malays, it is known mainly by the older women, and even then rarely spoken about directly (taboo). However, it’s usually presented to young mothers by a nurse or older female relative as a standard and recommended thing, often sold as part of a package with other services for newborns (ex: swaddling blankets and a week’s worth of diapers, or sometimes state-standardised immunizations). Frequently they aren’t asked but rather more told, “and of course you’ll be getting the standard package for your baby daughter, right?” or, “well, of course you’ll want this, right? All good mothers go for it, and it’s subsidised by the government.” When it’s cheap, comes with a lot of other good things, isn’t named directly or mentioned only using jargon that you’re unaware of, and you’re exhausted from having just given birth, it’s an easy thing to say “yes” to something recommended to you by a doctor.

There is substantial pressure to follow cultural norms, also–not doing it is kind of like being blatantly “un-American” or whatever in other countries. Families will outright shun daughters for not doing it, often out of shame and embarrassment that their own family member would choose do something so terrible as to withhold such an important thing from a baby and force the Cat Christmas The Tree Started It T-Shirt But I will love this baby to grow up as an uneducated, unclean, unmarriable woman who can never enter heaven. In order to save face, it’s better to have raised a bad daughter and then reject her than to continue a relationship and endorse her anti-Malay, anti-Muslim, bad mother selfishness. The rest of the community usually follows suit. Singapore has a very high population density, and as a result, significantly higher social pressures than most other countries. There is a huge amount of misinformation promulgated about this, and I myself have seen pamphlets in hospitals stating that it is harmless and cleaner (neither of these are true–women are at higher risk of many infections and other issues if they are circumcised), that it is a core tenet of Islam (it isn’t), and so on.
