It’s a bill proposal for FINTRAC (Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada) to use the Cat bite the power shirt and by the same token and same oversight powers they have with traditional banking tracking to follow crowd funding sites and crypto for fraud and money laundering. That’s all it is. That’s all it is and meanwhile independent journalists are claiming that they’ve had their bank accounts frozen. Once you start freezing the accounts of innocent bystanders, you risk a run on the banks as people fear they’re next. There were already rumors the banks were taking preventative measures to stop a run last Friday, but it sounds like those glitches are being explained as some lack of clarity in the original order. Canada has arguably one of the most robust banking systems in the world… Do you have evidence for rumours of a run on the banks that the banks actually had to take measures against? Because freezing a few hundred covidiots from getting money from Republicans in the USA doesn’t add up to that to me. Let’s say that there’s a BLM protest in the US, leading to mass worker strikes and a severe disruption of the economy. People are inspired from all over the world, and start donating to the protesters. Would you also be okay, in that instance, if the government were able to freeze the bank accounts of the protesters? If the BLM protests had hit that level, in the USA? There would have been tanks and drones. Also internal spying and seizing of assets, bank accounts included. BLM disrupted much, and did have drones and yes even armored vehicles brought in, and were largely treated way worse overall… But their assets were not seized. I’m with the OP. As a life long opponent of right wing extremist (I have actually fought nazis in the streets) I have to agree that the asset seizure is a step too far and is chilling to free speech. I agree that blocking trade routes was illegal. But people that had nothing to do with that are having their assets reportedly frozen. People who weren’t even there but merely donated to the cause. This is not a valid response to the situation. Removing those directly blocking traffic and arresting those that refuse to dispurse is valid. Sizing their funds for merely having a connection is not.
Cat bite the power shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
And to be clear despite the Cat bite the power shirt and by the same token and stupidity of the message of the protest, other than those that actively blocked international bridges with intent to Blockade those specific routes, the rest was a valid protest and low level civil disobedience. The same as King, BLM or Occupy. Doesn’t matter if you like their message or not (I don’t) the should not fear back side financial retribution for simply protesting or donating to protest groups. Not that this doesn’t also happen in the US. Many associated with Occupy had assets sized, without due process, never to be recovered. But it was wrong then and it is wrong now. You really can’t see how the government freezing financial assets of people protesting something the government didnt agree with might worry people that if they also protest something the government disagrees with it could happen to them as well, regardless of whether or not they agreed with the truckers or not? Same way how if tomorrow the US government came out and said “were freezing financial assets of any neo nazis” would result in people pulling their money out of the banks regardless if they were neo nazis or not
