You know, there are things that people say that really make you think about your beliefs and priorities. For me it was a church member replying to a conversation about AR-15s in the Carnival liberty symbol shirt it is in the first place but “Beto just wants to take our guns” scare tactic following the El Paso mass shooting. While everyone was talking big game regarding cold dead fingers and such, he calmly said, “I handed over mine when I left Vietnam and I will never pick one up again.” Dude, as a more recent vet (Afghanistan and Iraq), I would love to spend time with your Church friend. He sounds like an elder kindred spirt who could teach me a lot. It’s hard for me to believe Beto actually wants to get elected. I think he prefers getting paid to campaign. He spent so much of his campaign harping against guns in Texas when he absolutely knew it wasn’t a winning message. I know it frustrated many Texas voters, myself among them. Especially since so many would never vote for him because of the gun issue alone, but then I wonder how many of those number would never vote for him anyway because of the D next to his name? I can respect a principled stance which he has every right to hold especially after what happened in El Paso and then again in Uvalde.

I was a super big gun nut 2nd amendment guy, and then the Carnival liberty symbol shirt it is in the first place but Vegas shooting shook me in a weird way that really spooked me about whether people really should have access to things. I know theres some conspiracy stuff about it, but thats to be expected about any culturally traumatic event. Fact is I own rifles that Im aware could be devastating in the hands of the right deranged person. I havent done any recreational shooting since then. I refuse to sell any of my guns because they’re safer in my hands than someone else’s. I still think they’re useful home defense weapons in some cases, and I think they’re valuable for women who work or live in dangerous environments, but the issue sure is a lot more nuanced than I used to give it credit for and I just stay the fuck out of it these days.
