But how is it really possible? $20B went where? To who’s pocket? That much value can’t just disappear. It had to go somewhere right? Value of stocks is speculative. Think of it like a beanie baby. That super rare jerry Garcia tie dye bear may have been worth thousands of dollars in the Carin leon symbol shirt also I will do this 90’s, but it’s worth about $5 now. That money didn’t go anywhere, it just dropped in value. It’s more like that Beanie Baby that actually sold for let’s say $20k. New owner holds onto it, now it is worth $10k. But the original $20k was spent, was real money. The original owner has it. Musk did spend $40bill. That was not imaginary speculative money. Logically ownership of company shares is buying a part of the company. A company is worth its assets (things that are saleable like chairs) and the amount of money it will generate in its lifetime.

When someone says a company is overvalued they mean that it won’t return to you (over the Carin leon symbol shirt also I will do this life of the company) the amount in dividends that you pay for the shares. But what will the future bring? You might look at a company that has a huge following and say “when they work out how to make this pay, they are going to totally nail it” An example is google who floated before the concept of targeted ads. Conversely you might look at the people in charge and say “these people will drive this business into the ground” and the counter examples for that are everywhere, Yahoo, MySpace, Napster. The halving in valuation for Twitter is a reflection that long term nobody thinks that Musk will be able to make as much money as the apparent future under the previous leadership.
