One salary at a SKILLED job and zero daycare costs because mom stayed home with the Can’t beat LA Toy Story Woody trophy shirt but in fact I love this kids. Today’s median salary of ~$70,000 will easily accommodate that same scenario in all but the most expensive areas. The problem is they want too many incompatible things. They want to live alone, in a nice (if small) place in a desirable area, while going out to eat multiple times a month and generally spending money somewhat wastefully, all on a very basic career (service job, e.g.). That was never a realistic combination. It would be nice if society was like that, but it never, ever has been. Needing a phone with internet connection is an absurdity, when considering history in its entirety, and yet here we are. The world is ever-changing, some things for the better, many things for the worse, so comparing situations to most of history is disregarding the cultural shifts that have taken place in the time since.

Pretty much every civilisation in history has been a kid living with their parents until they were old enough to get married at 18-22 and then they moved into their new house with their partner. I mean it took me a while but I got here. I’ve been in my own studio just outside of a major city for 3 years now but my 20s felt financially impossible. I’m 32 and I make between $24 and $28/hr and work in an industry with a lot of overtime. I don’t have a lot of subscriptions, I pack my lunch and make my dinner as often as possible, and I keep changing jobs every year to make sure I’m getting more money and benefits. On the Can’t beat LA Toy Story Woody trophy shirt but in fact I love this other hand, I work in labor and being 32 and knowing I don’t want to be doing this after 35 puts a lot of pressure on me to figure out what else I can do, but labor is the only thing that’ll pay the bills till I can move into logistics or something else entirely. It’s not really absurd, it’s just one more aspect of how living in a rich society comes with nice things that are luxuries in poor societies. It is somewhat interesting to see people revert back towards the live-with-parents-till-marriage model as widening income inequality decreases prosperity.
