And that’s why his generation was so strong in science fundamentals. The post-WWII era was a golden age of labor for most Americans because they got to live in one of the few nations whose infrastructure wasn’t devastated by WWII. So you’ve got Americans producing a lot of what the rest of the world is using to rebuild, and that’s all being financed by American banks etc. There was just about zero competition in the auto market, for instance. That all started to change as global competitors started to come online in the late 60s, and that matured in the late 70s. You get Carter appointing “Tall Paul” Volker as fed chairman to sort out a bunch of issues (like runaway inflation) and at about that time you also see Union negotiations that involve a lot more wage freezes and wage givebacks.

Great Grandma and Great Grandpa don’t have a lot of money because they worked ordinary jobs. They have a lot of money to spend because they are cleaning up on long-term investments and have very few actual expenses. yes, before Regan destroyed the tax system and allowed people to hoard hundreds of billions of dollars we had a functioning society. greed absolutely ravaged the American dream. my wife and I are lucky enough to both have white collar work from home jobs but even with two good salaries money isn’t easy. we rent because the houses in our area are all selling for more than they’re worth. I can’t bring myself to buy a house with negative equity. then you read stories about how some billionaire asshole gifted $1,000 to a bunch of graduates. if we went by percentage of total money that’d be like me gifting them half a penny each. these people have unfathomable wealth. all that money used to be in middle and upper middle class bank accounts. my grandfather has 3 pensions and he was a janitor. the previous generation fucked us so so hard and it is unbelievable. now they sit in their nice houses bought 30 years ago for chump change and write posts on social media about how lazy this new generation is. then they wonder why we can’t wait for them to all die off. once everyone over 60 in government is dead we will be better off.
