During the early years of the franchise, the Bills struggled to find success. The team’s first quarterback, Jack Kemp, showed flashes of brilliance, but the team could not sustain consistent winning seasons. However, in 1978, a glimmer of hope emerged: a young, dynamic quarterback named Joe Ferguson. Ferguson led the Bills to their first playoff berth in 1980, sparking a new era of optimism for the long-suffering fanbase.

The arrival of Jim Kelly in 1986 marked a turning point in the Bills’ history. Under Kelly’s leadership, the team dominated the AFC East, making the playoffs 10 times from 1988 to 1999. The Bills reached the Super Bowl on four consecutive occasions from 1990 to 1993, but unfortunately, they were unable to bring home the Lombardi Trophy. Kelly’s arm, Bruce Smith’s fierce pass rush, and Thurman Thomas’s shifty running style formed the foundation of one of the most formidable teams of that era.

After the Bills’ Super Bowl heartbreak, the team entered a period of decline. The following years were marked by poor performances and coaching changes. However, the arrival of Sean McDermott as head coach in 2017 brought a glimmer of hope. Under McDermott, the Bills have rebuilt their defense and developed a promising young quarterback in Josh Allen. The team has made the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, including a return to the AFC Championship Game in 2021.
