It’s more about cobbling together different single or few issue driven voter bases. Let’s say 20 to 35% are fervently on one side of say LGBTQ repression. They stick with you and you’ve already lost say 30% on the other side that will vehemently oppose you. You only care about that middle group. You then try to capture enough of those to put you over.
