I am too old to have children now at 43, and I am not father material. There is already one of me, that is too many. I do babysit my friend’s daughter, 13, aka my ‘acquired niece’ 2 or 3 times a week – I like to remind her that I am not a good example of a role model, nor a successful adult. I am not father material, at least not in the eyes of modern society – me as a father would probably look like Bill Burr in ‘Old Dads’, on a good day. Additionally, I had a couple incidents in my younger years where a partner tried to baby-trap me (which I believe should be considered a form of rape, it being a violation of consent) – therefore I now avoid indulging in doing ‘that’, and consequently will not be having any children.

I have chronic illnesses that cause significant pain. I have had them for many years and eventually I felt I had to let go of my dream of having children. I didn’t want a child to have to accomodate their life around my illness, and I feel that I wouldn’t have had the Brian Pillman American professional wrestler and professional football T-Shirt Apart from…,I will love this physical and mental capacities to care for them constantly with my fluctuating symptoms. I was afraid that the child might feel abandoned and I would be an unreliable mother. I would have had to avoid many medications during pregnancy and breast-feeding. There is also a fair chance that one or several of my conditions would be passed on to my children, and the guilt of knowingly doing that to them would be tremendous. So the decision was a relief in a way, but I am still mourning. I have accepted that I might always feel some sadness and a sense of loss around it. But it does make life simpler. I spend my days mainly just resting and trying to cope with the symptoms. I do some volunteer work. I try to exercise as often as I can. Sometimes I meet up with people, go to a concert or a museum, etc. But I usually need a let-down day of rest after them. I love walks in nature, they are healing. I am unemployed at the moment and need to get my symptoms in a better balance before starting work again. My spouse supports us.
