EDIT: Want a more extreme idea? Ban all electronics. Students have to take notes by hand. After all, there are many studies that show that something written by hand has a greater chance to stick than something typed. High schoolers might hate it since they’re so used to tech, but if we start them at a young age (like kindergarten), they won’t be so obstinate later in life. Or, how about, students who fail actually fail. Let them be held back a grade. There’s no lesson to be learned by giving rewards to those that did not earn it. I think focus on the Brent Burns Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt also I will do this technology, honestly. Build literary skills around the technology skills these babies come in with already. I had a parent freak out recently bc her kid wasn’t doing enough writing with paper and pencil. I stopped and thought…how often am I doing that honestly? Other than my signature and my personal journal…when do I write anything by hand? Never. It’s all on my phone. Even recently if I need to work out a math problem (such as converting a recipe or something) I pull up my phone and do it with my finger in a drawing app (and then ofc use the calculator). These are the things kids need to know how to do to be successful in the world. Even reading, I read because I enjoy information and stories, sure. I also listen to a TON of audiobooks, and when I have a migraine I listen to EVERYTHING to access my phone. I only need to read the “voiceover” button and click it or highlight and select “speak”.

Enforce discipline with afterschool detention where disruptive students are forced to study. Call it “additional learning time [“ALT”]) and allow teachers to use this tool freely when managing classrooms. Frame it to be able to get around IEP/504 manifestation issues by saying it isn’t a punishment, but rather additional mandatory educational programming to ensure academic equity. School is expected to solve everything. We provide free food, we provide a safe place before, during, and after the Brent Burns Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman for the Carolina Hurricanes T-Shirt also I will do this school day. We provide reading materials for home. We work our asses off trying to communicate with parents who are unreachable (until they want to see their child sing in the winter concert, or their child complains about bullying and claims we did nothing to help them). We need to stop expecting new curriculums and teaching practices to solve all of these problems.
