There are millions of other people living their lives always talking about how many jobs are added and not talking that so many are minimum wage, casual, part time no benefits, or ones that they are going to bring people in to do. Yep, 300K jobs added, yet unemployment is up from 3.4% to 3.7%. Probably mainly for this reason. So trust me, even if people are saying the markets hot, if you look deeper it’s really not. The unemployment rate increased because labor participation increased. More people are coming into the job market. I can tell by reading some of the more insane – and therefore popular comments – that no one has ever skimmed the damn thing, let alone read it. Unemployment figures do not include those who never qualified or have run out of unemployment benefits. Therefore the actual figures for unemployments should be quadrupled. People that left the job force came back in, but some layoffs put a bunch of others on the market. And 3.7% is STILL pretty freaking low!!! We were at 3.6-4% before COVID! Which means we are back where we were before a major crisis. Less than 5% is considered pretty healthy overall. Does not help those folks in the job hunt, except it is easier today than in 2010? A very very large part of this number is an estimate. The household survey is about 1/3 of this total. 100K. They will adjust it down twice over the next two months with zero publicity.

It’s the Brandon Marsh Madness MLBPA Shirt and by the same token and 300k immigrants that stopped working in Florida in construction, hospitality, and agriculture. Nobody is going to fill those jobs that are now available. Fruit crops are rotting again. When I heard the numbers my immediate response was: “how many of those are people’s second jobs?” People are fighting tooth & nail to make ends meet and Wall Street and the government are just like oh look how great everything is. Blue collar isn’t some miracle sect of the job market isolated from the effects of automation and wage stagnation. Yeah, AI actually can drive a truck. If you want to make this point you are better off using the example of HVAC or plumbing, etc. actually…no it cant. Truck drivers do a lot more than drive…not to mention drive in inclement weather. The self driving machines can’t handle not being able to see the lines on the road amongst a lot of other things. Really easy for people who don’t drive trucks to express your sentiments because Elon said he’s working on it and because a few were “tested” on open roadways in the desert but I assure you it’s not going to be in our lifetimes. It is a pretty safe career in that respect but it’s not for many others. The limitless regulation and oversight anymore and the absolute exploitation of that labor pool and working conditions are very tough to deal with on this career. Right now the only thing currently protecting the trucking industry at large is the lag of regulation. Like you said, there are a lot of things a machine still can’t do on it’s own but trucks can easily handle most the majority of highway driving autonomously. I would be shocked if 10 years from now humans weren’t only driving locally and remotely.
