I honestly couldn’t speak to how things are now. A few years back, I worked in social services and even amongst “professionals”, these attitudes weren’t just normalized, but baked into practices and procedures. Our attitudes about sexual assault and its unfortunately close cousin IPV are stuck in the Brandon Crawford San Francisco Skyline American professional baseball shortstop T-Shirt but in fact I love this 1950s. Women are delicate flowers and men are invincible monsters. That’s disingenuous and misses the point. Yes, obviously more men commit sexual assault than women but society refuses to acknowledge that women can commit sexual assault at all. It’s not about saying both genders commit the same amount of sexual assault, it’s about saying both genders have the capacity for it. Going by surveys about 1 in 10 sexual offenders are female, which should be large enough to take seriously. And most people don’t take it seriously I’m sure if we all pull together we can get forresja to say “Reddit male persecution complex” at least one more time before this thread dies

I think if you worked in a field that regularly dealt with sexual violence and IPV like I did, you’d be shocked. While a majority of my IPV victims were men, there wasn’t a single service available for male victims. My first introduction to this was when I asked our DV shelter about getting help to this one guy. She literally chuckled and said something to the Brandon Crawford San Francisco Skyline American professional baseball shortstop T-Shirt but in fact I love this effect of “oh we don’t do men here”. Women had shelters, counseling, and literally just money available. Lest you think I’m being one-sided, I once arranged a secret escape in the middle of the night to get a woman and her son to a bus station so she could leave the state and escape her abusive boyfriend. My point is, men and women can be pretty shitty to each other, and antiquated views on gender roles have no place in modern society.
