If you want to tell them, tell them. The answer to why spend that much on a single meal is, “it’s our money.” The answer to move back home because it’s cheaper is, “we’re doing fine. That’s why we’re okay to buy the Boston Celtics men’s basketball star squad signatures shirt and by the same token and expensive meal.” If they lecture, tell them to stop. You didn’t spend their money. I’m assuming you’re adults, set some boundaries with your family. My family doesn’t have a lot of money. I don’t get into the dollars and cents of things. Sometimes they guess and I just say yes, it was that much. But truly, it’s fine to say, I went out to dinner at the nicest place. Without divulging an amount. If they press or want to lecture, it’s ok to remind them that you are an adult who is responsible for your own budget and responsible for when and where you choose to spend a little extra on yourself. They don’t get a say in it, and if they feel like they do, they might find themselves hearing less and less about you.

If it’s their business and they have to know, tell them you are saving just fine, and you actually also saved in advance for the Boston Celtics men’s basketball star squad signatures shirt and by the same token and meal. Many people want the instant gratification of getting something when they want it instead of saving first, but that is a thing people actually still do. And it’s commendable in my mind. You don’t have to tell them. Don’t lie about celebrating your anniversary but they don’t need to know any more than that. An anniversary is a perfect time to splurge and it is absolutely none of your family’s business how much you, as an adult, spend of your own money on things. Here is my thoughts on sharing and judgement. Fuck them. Share it you want. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to go or look. Don’t let others expectations of you dictate your happiness
