Monitor envy is a real thing for IT departments to deal with, if anyone gets newer or bigger monitors then you will start of cascade of requests for new monitors. Here’s a example, some Software Developer brought in a Double-Wide monitor from home, everyone already has two monitors but they see this Sexy new monitor and we immediately get requests with “business case use’s” attached to them. These software Dev’s all have dual 24″ monitors, they need Double-Wide monitors that will do the exact same thing, but look sexier. I could go on and on about this, but some people feel that their status as a employee is linked to their equipment, if someone lower then them has nicer stuff then that’s a problem and they need a upgrade NOW!!!

The better supervisors I’ve had always made sure their subordinates had good equipment before upgrading their own. I completely agree with that and do that, I use a older HP laptop that is 5 years old but has upgraded RAM and a bigger and newer SSD installed, and a fresher battery. I don’t travel much so I don’t need one of those super thin “Sexy” laptops either. If you go cheap then that just means more work for us and a less productive (more importantly, less Happy) employee. In my example I said the Software Devs already have two 24″ monitors (these are 4K 60hz monitors btw) and they are setup as dual monitors. This is just 38ish Software Devs, so we’re talking about 49″ Double-Wide monitors for 38ish people that have to be compatible with the hardware they are currently running. Those monitors range from $900-$1,300 per piece, so lets say $1,000 just to stay conservative. That’s $38K-$40K in just monitors, not including Cables and Shipping costs (about half of these people work from home so it’s additional cost of $110 per monitor for at home shipping with insurance). Then the IT staff has to work with all these Software Dev’s to make time to swap out the Monitors and then tweak the settings to make them work for them (Just cause their Software Devs doesn’t mean they know anything about hardware). Then there’s getting the old monitors back, in a Office setting that’s easy, but if their at home you now need to ship them two giant boxs with pre-paid shipping to ship their old 24″ 4K monitors back, that also has to be insured and costs about the same, $110 per monitor X2 so $220 if they are a remote worker. Then you have to arrange shipping pickup with Fedex or UPS! so you have to schedule times for pickup if they live in a Apartment, Condo, or live in a area with package thieves.
