I recently had to re-read all the drivers instruction stuff to get my drivers license back and they make this abundantly clear. This is new to me. I only started driving last year. I go 85mph and always feel a little weird when somebody feels the need to speed by me and pass me but at the end of the day, I don’t give a fuck if they’re a speed demon and need to be in front of me. I’m going fast enough, take a chill pill. Because it merges into another major highway that I need to be on and I’m probably going the “allowed limit” and not the posted one You’re in left lane. Just passed slower car on your right. There is an upcoming slower car in the right lane in X seconds.

Have you seen the I-88 and Route 59 intersection? If not, I suggest looking it up because it’s very poorly designed. It basically forces you to drive on the wrong side of the road and then go back to the side you’re supposed to be on. It’s supposed to prevent left turns, but it’s terrifying because it’s confusing. I had a coworker who said they ride in the left most lane no matter what for their 10 miles on the highway because their exit was on the left. Not a great reason in my opinion. This is a question I’ve always wanted to answer and I don’t see anyone here with my reasoning: I always drive in the left lane on any road or highway I’m on. Typically I drive 5-15 over, depending on if the people around me are 5-10 over. If everyone is going the speed limit I sit in the left lane at 5 over. If everyone is going 10 over I sit there at 15 over. Nobody is trying to pass me because I’m going quicker. If anyone does move into the lane right behind me, or I see someone approaching behind me faster than I’m going, I move to the right until they pass and then I go back and continue on my way. I’ve never obstructed anyone in the left lane this way, and I don’t tailgate slow left laners either unless they’re traveling under the speed limit. It’s my opinion that if someone is going 5 over and I want to go 10 over, I have no right to ride their ass until they move over. I’m basically waiting for them to move out of the way of breaking the law so I can have a turn doing it worse so I don’t really think it’s fair to be upset with their speed when they’re already literally driving illegally fast.
