In 2012, I felt like it was a pretty “undiscovered” country with not much outside influence. It felt like an untouched island in Asia. Not many foreigners. My friends back home still thought it was just China or something. American soldiers were the Bobby Lashley An American Wrestler And Mixed Martial Signature T-Shirt But I will love this only people foreigners I ever encountered, and the occasional middle-aged English teacher. It was kinda wild and fun. Koreans didn’t really speak any English. By 2021, it seemed a lot different at least to me. More globalized and standardized, almost like a mini-US or even mini-EU but with a Korean twist. Everyone knows about Kdramas and Kpop by now. A lot of strange things ironed out, but that’s what gave it the charm originally. A LOT more foreigners in various jobs, and a lot more foreigners that could speak Korean. The crazy grime of Itaewon was washed away, Hongdae lost its young “hippness” and just became a commericialized area for entertainment. A lot more kpop weirdos looking for their “oppa.” Expensive – In 2012 I could survive on $300 a month for food and that’s with occasionally eating out – nowadays no way. Still most Koreans can’t really speak any English, so that didn’t change.

I think someone else mentioned this, but I remember in 2012 on a weekday morning you’d see so many drunk people everywhere. Office workers laying on the Bobby Lashley An American Wrestler And Mixed Martial Signature T-Shirt But I will love this street at 7am in a suit and tie completely hammered. I can’t say I’ve seen that around Covid times. A lot of things, but one is 10 years ago, it was still said that it was shameful for a woman to smoke. Women were hiding to smoke. Random, but women don’t wear heels literally everywhere and with every outfit anymore. Much more acceptable for them to wear sneakers as everyday wear, which was noticeably not the case in 2013 when I first came. Honestly Korea is one the bigger power houses economically on a global scale with a thriving infrastructure. I don’t know about societal issues or if population control is an issue but from a monetary standpoint they are doing pretty good.
