I couldn’t tell you how many accolades my oldest daughter has received for helping these children who are truly amazing. Some with autism can, unfortunately a large portion of autistics are impacted developmentally and can never speak, let alone attend med school. I do believe that ASD should be reclassified by the dsm to include criterion for level of cognitive function. Some, but not a “large portion.” Groups like Autism Speaks have perpetuated this myth because it helps their funding. Notice how that 40% is still not the majority tho. Also Autism Speaks wouldn’t be a viable source either, as like Adam said, they basically specialize in spreading mis-information and fearmongering.

You’re not telling the Blue Leopard Def Leppard Hysteria shirt and by the same token and truth, and you don’t get to decide how autism should be classified, just because you’re too ignorant to understand what the SPECTRUM in autism SPECTRUM disorder means. It’s called that specifically due to how differently it can present itself from person to person, to deny people an autistic diagnosis EVEN IF THEY HAVE CLEAR AUTISTIC SYMPTOMS just because they can speak or don’t have as high of a support need is just peak ablelism. So of course you’re gonna get downvoted, you deserve it. It’s reddit man, no one deserves anything it’s just people chatting lighten up. Anyway that’s my point really, the current spectrum is too broad for diagnostic and treatment purposes. When half the asd population is so severely impacted they may never achieve independence, and while half could potentially be high functioning enough for med school it’s not really the same is it?
