People who chose to attend community college or a cheaper state university are punished for making an otherwise smart decision. People paying college loans usually have more disposable income AFTER their loan payments than those who didn’t attend college at all. Just give the money to everyone who needs it. Yup. I went to community college, after my first year I figured I could not sustain the cost of tuition. I then entered the workforce, changed careers, busted my butt for a decade and finally make a living wage. My career is the cousin to an “Engineer” that doesn’t require a college degree. Although I’m in a similar field to what I set out to get my degree in, I make on average $10-20k less a year than my licensed counterparts. I constantly feel left out of these conversations, because I evaluated the cost, and decided the burden was too high. Am I going to be compensated for the potential $300-600k of lost income over the course of my career? No, that would be absurd. I did the right thing®, and if student loans are forgiven, I will now be on the hook for paying for people who did not. I will NEVER support these initiatives until some sort of systemic fix is in place to account for the hundreds of thousands/millions of people like me, who weighed the options and would have to subsidize the people who did not. We would be taking the burden from exclusively the group of people who benefit from having a college degree, and unfairly distributing it to the people who do NOT have a college degree, and are already in lower income brackets.

It’s literally an upwards wealth transfer. This is just like Trump trying to repeal and replace the ACA. Show me the better alternative then we can talk. Wiping one generations debt without simultaneously fixing the root of the problem is a nonstarter. AOC is right again. I certainly support many programs from which I do not directly benefit, child tax credit for one. Children going hungry in the U.S. is a travesty.
