I mostly worked in manufacturing and ending the day about 4pm is designed to get the finished product shipped before FedEx / UPS finishes pickups. During COVID, we did 4 x 10 and started around 6am. I was “expected” to be in my office / production support job by 7, but I used to take 1 hours of PTO every day just to come in later. Eventually, I just wore people down and started coming in 7:30 to 8. Every other week I gotta get up at 4:30 to get to the hospital for shift change to meet pilots and med crew at 6. There’s no reason for it. I can do my job at any point in a 24hour period. It’s completely arbitrary with modern communications but we don’t let progress stand in the way of tradition. I’ve worked a similar schedule in the distant past. Loved getting off at 3 and being able to still potentially get stuff done during business hours that normally I’d need to take PTO to do. Need to get to the bank and not fight Saturday morning rush time? Sweet. Quick mid-afternoon shopping trip at a quiet mall/store? Sign me up. Not having to fight the 5-7 pm gym crowd? Sweet.

Fair if you don’t like those hours. But they have benefits and plenty of people do like them. Some businesses rather like them.
