Of course none taken. Even in my state, only a few section of people who have historical ties with forrest communities have tattoos. And while tattoos are prevalent in rural population…it is not common or widely accepted in cosmopolitan metro cities. And now it has become more accepting. That’s what I said in my first comment. It’s not about “intellectuall class”, but caste. Tribal communities have always used tattoos, but among the UCs only the urban liberal culture does. Mom said it’s groundnut plant (2×2) but looks more like “Kambi Kolam” (think it’s close mandalas, but I can’t find direct reference) A lot of people viewed tattoos as rebellious and ‘gang’ stuff cause tattoos do have a history of that. Some white collar jobs even today prohibit any visible tattoos but that culture is slowly fading away.

That was an aberration. My grandparents and their generation in my state had tattoos and their generation was pretty cool with it. Saw a couple of replies cross questioning this but I am a living example of this and whatever you said is 100% accurate It’s common in rural and tribal areas but not in urban or as I said cosmopolitan cities. And not in all villages in all states. If anything, talking about it somewhat openly has helped break barriers that were far flimsier than I assumed, and shied away from. I remember that even though it was a thing, men would guard their alcohol with their life and find the most secluded place to have few drinks and would sheepishly avoid their wife and kids post drinking. As someone who’s had tor ravel the length and breadth of India for work .It almost feels like the it metros and maybe some tier 1 cities are a bubble. The tier 2-3 have still not changed nor have they accepted a more open or liberal thinking
