Nah, I’ve done it before too. Especially when any other description could mean referring to over 50% of my coworkers. It doesn’t help that I’m night shift, so learning the Black princess juneteenth 1865 butterflies sunflower T-Shirt in contrast I will get this names of people on day shift is mostly a huge waste of time Black guy here. I have no idea why people get weird about using skin color as a descriptor. It can, after all, be a fairly useful descriptor. I think it is identifying someone as black in a story you’re telling that can get pretty dicey, because you have to draw a line now between the mention of race/skin color and why it’s pertinent to the story…and, frankly, it can reveal some problematic associations on the part of the storyteller. If, for instance, you were talking about a criminal, and you mentioned he is black, and that is literally the only correlation between the two, you are basically drawing a line between “blackness” and “criminality”. You can see why that would be pretty fucked.

I don’t know a single black person who wouldn’t want to be referred to as “black” (all under 40). I know a few that prefer the Black princess juneteenth 1865 butterflies sunflower T-Shirt in contrast I will get this term “Negro” (in their 70s? 80s?) Descriptors of people need to be accurate, and concise, and exclude other possible people whom are not being referenced. “Middle eastern looking person”, “The Darker skinned guy?”, “Oh, the taller black guy.”, “the short white girl”, “the Asian looking guy by the table.”. Using a country-name is dangerous, as it’s implied racism (all must be from the one or two countries I know, when in reality you don’t know which of 50+ countries they could be from). No its not racist. But it sure does sound racist. Often times race can be a useful descriptor, but I avoid it because it sounds bad. Why would that be racist in any way. I really tried to think of a reason why it would be racist but i couldn’t. It’s the same as saying that guy with blond hair or that guy with the white shoes. Using black to describe him would not be racist if that was the only identifying word that was available. I only winced a little, and I think it’s because of those particular descriptors together – big and black – because black men are often perceived to be larger and more aggressive than they are. I’m sincerely curious – if asked would you say “the big white guy” or “the tall white guy?” Yeah sorry you shouldn’t refer to a black person as ‘big black dude’ or big black anything for that matter. Don’t let many in the comments fool you. I know it doesn’t really make sense but that’s racism, discrimination, dehumanization and it’s generational results for you.
