If you get forgiveness, you lose your degree. That’s the Black Pilled University Classic Varsity T-Shirt but in fact I love this only way to keep the workforce playing field equal IMO I think my hang up with it is there is no change to the system. So you forgive some student debt for a generation, but if there is no reform to student loans, then we’ll just be here again. I don’t have the solution, but when my spouse and I graduated in 2008 I wish there would’ve been better scholarships, like I had one through the university and wasn’t allowed any other because it waived out of state fees. I applied to private scholarships, but didn’t get any. My spouse, their parents wouldn’t fill out the FASFA, for whatever reasons, so they couldn’t get ANY school sponsored scholarship. Then probably a mandatory financial course that provides context as to what it means to take out a private loan vs government loan, how long to pay off based on salary, is the salary even possible? Like come in with real world example budgets and how those families live. Forgiveness for more than teachers and doctors if you work for certain public sectors (city/state government jobs).

I was lucky that my parents paid for most of mine, but I still had two semesters out of 9 that were “out of state” (engineers typically take 9-10 semesters to complete) because the Black Pilled University Classic Varsity T-Shirt but in fact I love this scholarship only lasted for 8. Those two semesters cost me $20,000. And that was considered average in 2008. Not sure how I benefit from making sacrifices to pay off my loans while getting the privilege to pay back others as well with a side of inflation I know it’s not what you want to hear, but cancelling student loan debt outright isn’t a good idea for many reasons. A better solution would be to give everyone with income less than some amount, say $40,000, a free $5,000 check. Or maybe a $10,000 check. This is far fairer. Many types of debt exist. People are struggling to pay car loans and credit cards. The laser focus on student loans exclusively is quite regressive in many ways: College students are statistically more likely to come from wealthier families, even those with high debt levels.
