My father was an investigator for 30 years. This is anecdotal, but I went to his office a bunch of times and never saw one. Mostly, they had redwell folders with tabs and notes i.e. a witness tab with statements, a police reports tabs, pictures, autopsy/forensic, public records, and a notes/to do tab. They use digital tools for that now. The military uses electronic boards to make connections between individuals and groups routinely. It’s an association charting method. I can’t speak for police but it’s a valid method in other intelligence gathering organizations. Idk right after college I was an investigative reporter not a detective. I wasn’t in college that long ago software handled it then too lol. My wife was a SWAT resource in the 90s (she was a police officer) and yes, they did use string boards from time to time when making plans for sting ops. They were early versions of PowerPoint flow charts. It would be personal preference in this age. In my line of work we often use modern programming for qualitative research. However the older members of our research team are very old school and everything needs to be printed and they would be the guys to use strings and pictures. I know when I was in school for research and statistics, we practiced with strings and such since we didn’t have access to the computer programs. We had chalk boards and millions of notes on a cork board in the 90s. We did the occasional chart on the chalk board but never the whole string and picture thing – no one got time for that.
