Martial arts classes for women can do much more harm than good if you get delusional and think you can fight men off. I disagree, most people don’t even know how to throw a punch. Someone trained in proper martial arts is used to fight other skilled individuals of any size or gender. “Self-defence” and traditional martial arts don’t work, imo. A couple of thoughts after having done a bit of everything for a decade or so: Pick something where the Bill DeMott American retired professional wrestler road agent and trainer T-Shirt and I love this core concepts have been proven to work in fights: so BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, wrestling, MMA and so on. There’s a reason you don’t see UFC fighters with an akido background. “Go live” regularly. This means sparring / rolling as much as you possibly can. You can’t learn to fight without fighting. Compete. Nothing incentivises you to learn how to fight like knowing you’ve got a fight / competition in 8 weeks. If you’re most interested in self-defence I’d recommend MMA. Simply knowing how to get up off the floor (with someone trying to keep you on the floor!) is a core concept in MMA that you won’t get striking. But knowing how to clatter someone before they’ve got you on the floor is a core concept you won’t get in BJJ / wrestling. In terms of where to go; gyms will generally offer trial classes – why don’t you try a bunch? I’d highly recommend you go to somewhere big. The bigger the gym, the more women will go (important to keep you coming back and give you lots of sparring partners).

There are plenty of women training here, very welcoming and pleasant training environment. Coaches are amazing, great facilities, timetable from 7am to 9pm + they offer women only classes. Any martial art needs to be practiced a ton to be effective and unless it includes plenty of sparring it would be useless in a stressful situation. If you’re interested in martial arts pick something like Brasilian Ju-jitsu, Kyokushin Karate or Muai Thai and keep at it but don’t fall for self defence courses.
