The fact is, at an early level you are the one assisting on projects and that is its own role with responsibilities that you are responsible for. It doesn’t help anyone to distort this, as it leads to unreasonable expectations of the job. If you think innuendo looks better on a CV, hiring managers are wise to this and it will be clear when someone was at an assistant level as soon as you speak to them. Even if the work is repetitive and, at times, tedious, they are the best ways to learn (in a good organisation), because you will be assisting people who know their shit and on projects that are meaningful. I have spoken to people with 3 years ‘marketing’ as a grad ‘Channel Manager’ (eg. social media manager) role at a small company where they were the only marketer. In general, these people are less clued in than people with 2 months as an assistant in a good team.
