And a lot of them show up in the Best mr. Feeny boy meets world shirt and by the same token and emergency room and make up complaints in order to get a bed for the night. We see it a lot. We actually have a ton of shelter space and the closest one is only 3 blocks away! They also let patients stay in the lobby at night if the shelter is closed before they get there and it’s cold out. But most of the patients were see in the ED just prefer to not be in a shelter. Some of them don’t prefer it. Some of the shelters have rules about drug use, so they can’t be in there. It’s pretty complicated. No one right answer because it can be unsafe and the city might be liable, and you have to worry about the safety of other people, but people who use drugs (or struggle with rules, etc.) still need places to stay when it gets cold. I agree, but the ED is not that place. We cannot be a homeless shelter and take care of sick people. Wait times everywhere are already through the roof. This exacerbates the issue.

I don’t know what the Best mr. Feeny boy meets world shirt and by the same token and answer is because if I were homeless, and it was 0 degrees outside, I’d go anywhere I could too. We used to not see as many homeless on the streets in our area of Alabama until they closed one of the shelters, there was some but this bad. There is only one shelter now for 3 regions. This shelter was there last winter and I don’t know what people will do this winter. It isn’t uncommon to get below freezing, especially overnight. Particularly the further away you get from the Gulf of Mexico. The record low for Huntsville is somewhere in the teens (Fahrenheit). Wow. I’ve only been to southern Alabama so I’d never have guessed the state could get that cold. Thank you for sharing.
