I’ve spent a lot of time in Latin America where culture and economic circumstance means that many people live at home until they marry or even after marriage. Recently, I’ve seen some of my friends in Latin America (in their 30s) move BACK in with their parents because of inflation. In Australia at least (which I suppose would be similar to parts of the Berried Alive Let’s Get Bananas TShirt What’s more,I will buy this states?), moving out of your house at 18 was the norm until quite recently. Culturally, I’d say that we saw it as 1. moving into the next stage of your life and 2. learning about financial responsibility. I moved out at 17. I had been working since I was 14. I had to move to study but I would have moved into a share house in my hometown if I hadn’t moved to study. I knew one kid from my entire graduating year who stayed at home with their folks. Most of those parents didn’t kick their kids out. I know my parents never kicked me out, they suggested I travelled to study. It was the norm. And we wanted out. Even now in my 30s, the idea of living with your parents after you’re 18 still sounds so lame to me

These days though, I completely understand that simply isn’t economically viable for many Australians. Student accommodation and cost-of-living means that studying and working enough to pay rent and all living costs is very well near impossible for most Australians. I imagine this is similar in many parts of the Berried Alive Let’s Get Bananas TShirt What’s more,I will buy this U.S. It also sadly (at least in my eyes) means that my generation was probably the last to properly enjoy this ritual of leaving home at 18… and it also means we’re the first to deal with absurd house prices and the least prepared. Because our culture is obsessed with independence and self interest rather than community and interdependence I think this is awful also. I live in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. I’m retired. Why do parents kick their kids out at 18? I believe it because Americans are to hung up on religion and what society says they’re supposed to do. Religion tells you you’re suppose to procreate and society thinks it awful if you don’t have kids. Well these people who kick their kids out at 18 are monsters. What your friends mother said “your 18 I’ve done my job” just shows they only had kids because society and religion told them they should. These parents don’t do know what love is. If they have any love for their children it’s conditional! I don’t really know anyone that did this. Everyone usually stayed with their parents until they graduate university and get a solid job.
