One of the Because I Was Inverted Funny 4th of July F-14 Merica T-Shirt besides I will buy this things ive seen asked but not really answered is what a livable wage is. Does that mean renting or owning a residence, new/used car, etc. $52k a year (the $25 request) puts someone above a minimum livable wage and into the comfortable area. If they get it, it’s going to rankle some feathers across other industries for sure. I’m not too far above this range with a Master’s. Granted, where I live it’s a competitive salary but I’m not going to be okay with not finding a comparable increase to compensate for my skill and education level. Aren’t those retail stores already mostly autonomous? I’m all for unions… I’m in the IBEW currently. But I feel like if that got their demands met Amazon would just cut staff down to a skeleton crew and lay off most of that workforce. That’s pretty much their goal anyways. I think we need more unions but I also think a lot of retail workers are fighting themselves out of a job when they try this. Get shop back into schools and build a better skilled labor force. Automation will eventually get there, but it definitely won’t happen overnight, even if they had all the coding and the designs for the machines, they still need to build tens of thousands of them, install them, and maintain them. Which will take ten years I bet. So I think in 12-25 years we will see the level of automation you are talking about widely adopted.

Cheaper to just automate tbh, I wouldn’t blame them. Retail workers don’t WANT to work retail anyway, no one should complain about those jobs being automated. Psh minimum wage here in Maryland is still a measly 10.50ish and trust me that all alot of places in Maryland mostly I know in Baltimore pay it’s effing terrible. It’s a serious struggle here in Baltimore that why the GDP of Baltimore is all drug sales. No one stands a chance in the city. No thanks. $25 is too much. People who actually work hard are in the minority. Americans in retail are either too lazy, they always try finding loopholes to do as little work as possible, or they straight up lie to the customer so the customer can be dealt by another employee. You want to see real work being done in retail with excellent customer service? Visit overseas to like South Korea. As someone who has worked in retail and thankfully ascended, this is depressingly true. Never have I seen lazier people in my life than in retail. Sometimes it surprises me how some people are homeless because retail will literally hire humans with the worst work ethic imaginable.
