My friend’s parents had a timeshare down in Florida. I guess maybe it makes sense if you’re the Basketball Mom Shirt in contrast I will get this type of people who want to spend every vacation in the same spot? I went down once with my friend when we were in college and it was pretty nice, though I’d never buy one myself. What it really is is a real estate scam where each condo has 52 “owners” that carry all the bills for the place and cede the management to a third party (that sold them the place) who basically piles on fees for everything. Like an HOA on steroids with the sane kind of drama. And because you’re a 1/52 owner you have all sorts of legal liabilities that a homeowner would have… which makes it almost impossible to get rid of unless you can find someone else who will sign the extremely one sided contract to “buy” it from you. Maybe belongs on r/unpopular opinion but…we’ve owned a timeshare for about 20 years. It was pricey for us then +15k. (They can be purchased on the secondary market cheaper) We do have yearly maintenance fees (about $600) but we are able to exchange through RCI at resorts all over the world (exchange for our unit costs another $200) so, after our initial investment it costs us $800 a week to stay at a 2 bedroom condo with a full kitchen almost anywhere. (Rooms at most of these resorts are $350-400/night) In addition, there are getaway vacations when there are openings if you are flexible with travel dates soon. We just returned from a week in Vegas in a 2 bedroom lockout suite with a full kitchen for $200/week. We have NEVER stayed at the resort we own, but plan to in the future.

But those discounted bedroom costs are only after paying the Basketball Mom Shirt in contrast I will get this original $15k, so is it really a discount? Especially considering what $15k in an investment fund would be worth after 20 years? $15k into AMZN exactly 20 years ago would be worth just over $1m today. If you got into Amazon a few years earlier say in 1998 around their first split then you’d be sitting on low 9-figures. Wow. That seems like a no brained for only 15k… $50 a month maintenance fee seems incredibly cheap too. Do you feel like being nickeled and dimed? Dang, a lot of hate here for Dave Ramsey. I’m not an expert, but the man has helped a lot of people by giving them structure. A lot of folks do not know how to handle money or finances. This man and his team gives people guidelines for getting out of debt. He is harsh because to break the cycle, it takes a complete lifestyle change. It’s optional. No one has to listen to him, but he is trying to help people.
