I’m sure Americans wouldn’t bat an eye if a country close to the Basketball mom cute novelty distressed shirt But I will love this US—say, Cuba—were to enter into a military treaty enabling Russia to install military resources at our doorstep. Yeah, we’d be totally fine with that. What right do Russians think they have to keep Ukraine out of NATO? Ukraine is an independent, sovereign state, and if they want to join NATO, then they can. Russian logic: “Oh no! NATO is getting closer to our borders. Better gather 200.000 soldiers and get faster to NATO border!” US did the same with the Cuban missile crisis. Why would Russia want US troops and nukes spring distance from Moscow. It’s easier for the Russian military to defend against a thrust from the Baltics than from the Baltics and Ukraine. Obviously, the Baltics being in NATO is bad for Russia, but Russia was too weak at the time to do anything about it. Just because the Baltics are in NATO now does not mean they will let their position get worse by letting Ukraine too. I don’t see how a nuclear missile is easier to defend whether it’s from one country or the other when proximity removes the ability to react to it. Despite claims to the contrary, Russia will not resort to strategic nukes immediately upon an invasion on its soil, due to MAD. One of the reasons nuclear powers still have conventional forces is to allow a gradual escalation, instead of a step function between “nothing” and “dead planet”.

In terms of nuclear weapons, what each of the Basketball mom cute novelty distressed shirt But I will love this powers wants to do is eliminate the possibility of the other performing a ‘first strike’ quickly enough that would disable their ability to retaliate. Having your enemy on each one of your doorsteps brings that closer to reality. But it’s not only about nuclear missiles but conventional forces too. The longer the ‘front’ with your enemy, the worse off you are. Surely you get that, right? NATO is already on Russian doorstep. Estonia is mere inches away from St Petersburg. And Latvia is same distance away as Ukraine. And no, when people say it’s like the Cuban missile crisis, it’s not about conventional forces. The comparison makes 0 sense. A conventional force can’t march from Cuba to United States. Surely you get that, right?
