I work on the Barbershop haircuts and shaves 1998 T-Shirt But I will love this other side of an ocean so my life is a lot more chill (at the expense of my salary being utter dogshit in comparison), but as far as I understand, the working in a playground + making 3x what other engineers do lifestyle often comes at the expense of a 60-80 hour workweek and stack ranking (I.e every team HAS to lay off x% of employees every year, even if everyone’s performance is stellar). And just getting the job requires learning an entire skillset you don’t use at work (leetcode interviews require a soulcrushing grind of pointless algo problems you’ll never need to solve at work). Plus you’re sorta expected to be so passionate about programming you do it in your free time as well. Definitely get looked down on if you don’t have an active github profile.

The stress is so great, you have to be able to retire by 35 because by 40 your third heart attack will have killed you. The cafes and shit exist because in order to make it, you shouldn’t leave the Barbershop haircuts and shaves 1998 T-Shirt But I will love this office for lunch plus you should stay longer, so you’d be best off eating dinner at work too. It’s a grind you do until your RSUs vest and then you’re out of there, off to work in a less stressful environment for less pay, because Google would just lay you off anyway when your total comp grows too big. They don’t care if it means losing all tribal knowledge they have. During hard economic times, they have to be able to show that they can still pull record profits. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a dream for many. I’m about to go back to university so I can finish my degree and then if I’m one of the lucky 1% who even gets an interview at one of those companies (In 3 years when I finish my bachelor’s, I’ll at least have 7 years of software engineering experience, so the chance might be a bit more than 1% for me) AND they’re willing to sponsor me, I can enter the H1B visa lottery, which I hear is dominated by code-sweatshops that only hire from India. If I get the opportunity, I’ll work my ass off for 4-5 years at that “dream” job, pull 80 hour weeks, etc. But it’ll take a toll on my body and I’ll be 35, in horrible physical shape and single, not by choice but because I won’t have time for gym or relationships. These are some horrible tradeoffs if you ask me. I just need the money because life is getting more and more expensive and my country has eastern-european salaries with increasingly American prices (for property and such I mean, we already pay more for fuel and sometimes food).
