I work with plenty of diverse people – Filipino, Iraqi, Sudanese. The way people act with them compared to me is honestly horrific sometimes. I don’t want some gramps being an ass to my coworker and then turning to me with the Baltimore Ravens 2023 NFL Schedule Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this sweetest smile. Sudanese coworker gets purposefully ignored, Filipino coworkers get treated like they have the intelligence of toddlers, Iraqi gets the ambiguous “where you from”. Yuck. Racism is def alive and well in some parts of Australia. It’s dying out slowly but still a ways to go. Generational change takes time unfortunately, especially if it skips a generation I’m from New Zealand (now in melb) and once worked in a supermarket with the sweetest and kindest Muslim Indonesian woman. This post reminds me when a customer (old white dude) came up to her as stated “haven’t been blowing up any buildings lately have you?”, chuckled and sauntered off. She just awkwardly laughed it off when I asked her If she was OK. She also replied “I’m used to these comments.”

My white middle aged female coworker then defended the Baltimore Ravens 2023 NFL Schedule Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this dude stating “he’s just joking, give him a break he has cancer” I can’t imagine how demoralising it would be to migrate somewhere and be treated like this by locals. Absolutely fucked up. Mate, Northland is right in the middle of one of the most cosmopolitan areas of Melbourne, lot of ethnics from all parts of the world go there, this kind of behavior could cost that old lady her job, If someone has a problem working around people from different walks of life that place is a wrong choice for them. I’m sorry this happened to your mate. As for the old white bigots (I’ve seen similar behaviour from both men and women) they need to stop being awful and racist. It’s like boomers and those older than them think because they got old, they’re allowed to say whatever they like without a care for the impact their words have and it’s just not right. I think these incidents are hopefully becoming less and less, and I am sorry about your friend. Hard to comment on situation, whether these people just have problems to themselves (mental illness, previous trauma, a life of poverty with lack of education). I think obviously your friend’s situation is quite shocking, but sometimes it’s easier to move forward by garnering compassion, and the offense might be less abhorrent if you saw that they were merely uneducated, or had difficulties in their own lives which manifested in the offensive actions.
